Aimer La Vie

in Life Coaching

This past Saturday, I was at the Union Square subway station here in NYC. The platform was so packed, and I actually opted to not get on the first 6 train that pulled up to the station because it was so overcrowded. I looked around and momentarily thought about exiting the station and hopping in a cab instead.

I’d like to say it was because I just didn’t want to wait for the next train or to be squished like a sardine, but the reality was, I was scared. I looked at the faces of all these strangers and felt fearful. Then I felt sad.

I’ve lived in NYC for over fifteen years. For most of that time, I’ve felt intrigued by strangers and like to think about what their lives are like. I find comfort in knowing we are all in this together, navigating the chaotic, but amazing insanity that living day to day in NYC offers.

After 9/11, I experienced the beauty of the people here coming together to support one another. Sure, there were times I felt vulnerable, but I don’t remember having the feeling I had on Saturday as I waited for my train.

Like all of you, I have been deeply saddened by what occurred in Paris last week. I feel devastated for the people who lost loved ones. Thoughts about the uncertainty of what’s to come, and thoughts about the scary world we live in, has left me dumbfounded.

I don’t know what to make of all of it, but I will tell you, I did not exit the subway station. While I obviously want to make smart choices and be conscious of what is going on in the world, I will not let fear dictate my life. I choose to live.

We cannot control those around us, and unfortunately there are some sick people in this world. What we can control though, is how we show up each day.

Love the ones you love, be kind to strangers, be kind to yourself, show appreciation for all that you have, and stop waiting for life to happen. It’s happening right now. Let’s do what we can to make it special.

Sending extra love your way today!
